A No-Fuss Mărțișor: Sfădițele

We’d talked about it before.

Him, calmly listening as I described it. He’d just got himself a second-hand 3D printer and was keen to try it out.

Me, with my usual enthusiasm—”Let’s see what comes out!”

Our other halves, patiently indulging the conversation, chiming in with helpful suggestions here and there.

Theory is one thing, practice is another, though… When the printer packed up, Mark came up with a new plan: using moulds and resin to carry on the story.

And then he really got into it—experimenting with more colours, diversifying. I guided, encouraged, and celebrated every little step of the journey.

When the finished pieces arrived, they looked like little sweets! Perfect? Maybe not. But that’s the beauty of them—handmade, telling a story of discovery, trial and error, and perseverance.

Sfădițele – The Story Behind the Symbol

The Sfădițele—or “the little quarrelers”—symbolise duality, harmony, and reconciliation. Rooted in Romanian folklore, they represent two figures, often sisters or friends, who argue yet remain inseparable. Just like the red and white threads of Mărțișor, their connection is one of contrast and unity—opposites that ultimately complement each other. The tradition reminds us that disagreements are part of life, but what truly matters is the bond that holds people together.

Inspired by this, we crafted our own version of Sfădițele, blending old symbolism with new techniques (3D printing and resin). We used recycled cardboard for the backs, added the traditional thread, the DOR stickers on most, and for the young ladies, silver chains instead of pins—safer and just as lovely.

We love the result, and we’d love to hear your thoughts!
