SUMMARY:Victor Brauner’s Departures and Returns Presentation by Irina Cărăbaș\, Bucharest (Romania) followed by a conversation with Nicola Baird\, PhD\, London (UK)
DESCRIPTION:This presentation by Irina Cărăbaș from the National University of Arts in Bucharest will focus on several key artistic and political contexts relevant to Brauner’s work and biography\, as well as his reception in Romania. It will be followed by a conversation with Nicola Baird\, PhD. Introductory remarks by Sorina Neagu\, Director of DOR – Romanian Diaspora. \nThis event is part of the online series “Flight or Fight. stories of artists under repression.” by The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted\, Ostracized and Banned Art (FAS) who tell untold stories of artists marginalized and persecuted by the German Nazi regime between 1933 and 1945. This event is in collaboration with DOR – Romanian Diaspora and #CarteadeVineri (CDV). \nAbout The Fritz Ascher Society\nBy discussing\, exhibiting and publishing their work\, we commemorate their lives and artistic achievements and teach about the Holocaust. FAS furthers the understanding of the history of the 20th century and initiates an active dialogue about individuality and integrity in response to conditions of extreme duress and to political tyranny. \nFAS’ projects allow diverse audiences to discuss highly relevant topics online and in-person in an environment that surpasses ethnic\, cultural and religious differences.

SUMMARY:#CarteadeVineri in dialogue with Mihai Buzea
DESCRIPTION:Mihai Buzea doesn’t just write about survival—he lived it. Gastarbeiter is his brutally honest\, darkly funny\, and unapologetically raw account of life as a Romanian migrant worker in London. From journalist to tree-cutter\, Buzea trades press credentials for a chainsaw\, navigating the underbelly of migrant labor with sharp wit and zero illusions. \nThis isn’t a sob story or a political manifesto—it’s a gripping\, first-hand dive into the chaos\, absurdity\, and grind of starting over in a foreign land. The book pulses with street-smart humor\, brutal truths\, and the kind of storytelling that hits you in the gut.

SUMMARY:#CarteadeVineri in dialogue with Anca Pârvulescu & Manuela Boatcă
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening where we attempt to bridge the humanities and social sciences alongside Anca Pârvulescu & Manuela Boatcă. \nHow are modernity\, coloniality\, and interimperiality entangled? Bridging the humanities and social sciences\, Anca Parvulescu and Manuela Boatcă provide innovative decolonial perspectives that aim to creolize modernity and the modern world-system. Historical Transylvania\, at the intersection of the Habsburg Empire\, the Ottoman Empire\, Austria-Hungary\, and Russia\, offers the platform for their multi-level reading of the main themes in Liviu Rebreanu’s 1920 novel Ion. Topics range from the question of the region’s capitalist integration to antisemitism and the enslavement of Roma to multilingualism\, gender relations\, and religion. Creolizing the Modern develops a comparative method for engaging with areas of the world that have inherited multiple\, conflicting imperial and anti-imperial histories.

SUMMARY:#CarteadeVineri in dialogue with Nicolae Rațiu
DESCRIPTION:“In 1950\, Ion Rațiu wrote ‘Moscow Challenges the World’ which has been recently republished.” An apt and timely discussion. \nMoscow Challenges the World\, recently republished with a new translation into Romanian and with forwards by Nicolae Rațiu and Prof Dennis Deletant with the title in Romanian ‘Moscova Provoaca Lumea’ is as the title suggests a studied analysis of Russia as a nation\, as a people\, as to why it is that their aggression is inevitable regardless of her ruling regime.
